Representative Payee Review Program
A representative payee is an individual or organization appointed by the Social Security Administration (SSA) to manage the benefit payments of someone who needs support to manage their own finances. This person or organization receives the benefit payments and uses them to cover the beneficiary’s current needs, such as food, housing, and medical care, while also saving any remaining funds for the future.
As Georgia’s designated P&A agency, the Georgia Advocacy Office (GAO) conducts performance reviews of both individual and organizational representative payees in accordance with SSA guidelines. These reviews help ensure that benefits are used appropriately and in the best interests of the person receiving Social Security benefits. GAO also conducts educational reviews and investigates allegations of payee misconduct to promote accountability and protect beneficiaries.
In addition to conducting reviews, GAO provides resources and education to representative payees, beneficiaries, and stakeholders to prevent misuse of funds and to ensure that people are less vulnerable, supported, and empowered to live with dignity in their communities.
