This settlement agreement is designed to make sure people who are in jail waiting for mental health evaluations or competency restoration services are not held in jail for long periods of time. It sets clear deadlines over the next several years that gradually shorten how long someone can wait for these services, with the final goal that no one waits more than 30 days for either an evaluation or restoration treatment. These changes are meant to ensure people get the help they need more quickly and are not left in jail unnecessarily. If an individual or a family member believes someone has been kept in jail longer than the time limits allowed under this agreement, they should report it by emailing forensiccomplaint@dbhdd.ga.gov.
