Individuals who have challenging behaviors are often limited in the opportunities and possibilities for a meaningful life in the community. Being connected to the people we love is critical to our emotional and physical well-being. David Pitonyak, Ph.D. presents ideas for moving beyond interventions and coverage to a system that supports enduring, freely chosen relationships.

Upside Down and Inside Out: Supporting a Person in Crisis
Register here:  FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15TH, IN DECATUR, GA, 9:30-4:30

People often engage in aggressive or self-injurious behavior because their needs are not being met, and no one has taken the steps to address the problems that precipitate those behaviors. A person in crisis needs caregivers to listen carefully and act with the belief that the person, no matter how confused or stressed, is attempting to communicate a message.

Each person in distress experiences distinct physiological changes and will react accordingly. David Pitonyak focuses on the physiology of these moments, the reasons why a person may be in and out of crisis, and strategies a person and his or her caregivers may employ to successfully avoid a stressful situation elevating into a crisis.
